Unbroken: Indigenous Peoples Today
D-Q University Warrior Training
In June 2018 I spent a weekend at former tribal college D-Q University. This was a special occasion because many young Native men had arrived to learn from their Elders and undergo Warrior Training. Warrior training is done to teach the young men survival techniques, and in the future they will have to demonstrate these skills in the wilderness to show that they can survive off of the land as their ancestors did.
On the first day we woke up at 4am for a 2 mile run and then a sunrise ceremony was held. Afterwards I went into observer mode and tried to photograph and learn as much as I could. These men were determined and focused, and even as they fasted and trained they were very patient and welcoming.
