Indigenous People's Sunrise Ceremony

This photo was taken on Alctraz Island in San Francisco during Indigenous People's Sunrise Ceremony. At about 4am in the morning my friend Bobby, myself, and thousands of both Native people and Native supporters boarded ferries to go to the island and participate.

The ceremony takes place twice a year on the same days as Columbus Day and Thanksgiving as both a protest to remove them and to remember the lives lost to the colonial genocide. As the ceremony progressed there were dances, prayers, and many stories and speeches shared by Elders of all different nations. The topic of environmental protection was also very strong as we stood under burnt orange skies from nearby wildfires.
