Unbroken: Indigenous Peoples Today
David Ocelotl, Aztec Native
In this photo Aztec Native, David Ocelotl, stands with his macuahuitl (a flat wooden club with obsidian shards) and his bow. In some Native cultures, young men can only gain the title of warrior after they craft a weapon of their own and use it to survive off the land just as their ancestors did.
"I made my macuahuitl myself to replicate an actual weapon of Aztec war. It's been shown throughout my culture for its intelligent craft and brutal force. It shows the strength of my people. The bow was given to me by a Pit River elder named Radley Davis to help me teach Warrior Camps. The bow represents the strength of Mother Earth and the love of the Maker."
