Lakota Warrior Crouching in the Tall Grass
Miniconjou Lakota dancer, Nick Ohitika Najin, hunkers down in the tall grass and scans the horizon with his eagle wing and bison jaw war club raised. This pose, accompanied with his red colored regalia, strongly displays that he is a warrior and a hunter.
"I dance more of an old style. I'm not a contemporary dancer. A traditional dancer will tell a story, so when you see someone dancing like me, you watch what they're doing because they're trying to say something.
"At pow wows a lot of people like to do a 'Searching song.' You'll see it when we get low to the ground. Long ago the grass was so high that you could crouch a little bit and you could go right through it and no one would even know you went by."
